Movies To Watch With Your Dog

As a little girl, I loved nothing more than to curl up on the couch with my best furiend and watch an exciting movie all about dogs. Often times, I was inspired to dream about achieving goals such as mushing in the Iditarod or traveling all around public lands with my sidekick. As I got older, I realized that those desires to do more with my dog never waned, but instead grew stronger. I love revisiting certain movies–especially ones that make me hold Nihmh a little tighter and count my blessings for getting to be her mama. These are four of my favorite movies to watch with my girl. What other movies do you think we should check out?

Eight Below
Got an itch for adventure? Eight Below is a story about eight sled dogs that are stranded in Antarctica after the entire human crew is evacuated due to harsh weather conditions. When the mission to retrieve the sled dogs is called off, their handler, Jerry Shepard, is determined to find a way to make it back to Antarctica to rescue his team. This film was loosely based on a true story from 1958, in which fifteen sled dogs were abandoned when the expedition team was unable to return to the base. If there’s any film that will have you on the edge of your seat, it’s this one.

Marley & Me
Puppy fever? This movie may have you reconsidering. Marley & Me is about a husband who gifts his wife a puppy in an attempt to stall her “biological clock.” With little knowledge on raising a puppy, Marley continues growing into an unstoppable, 100lbs beast that just won’t quit. For newspaper writer, John Grogan, Marley becomes the inspiration and star of his new hit column. Despite this rambunctious troublemaker’s antics, you’ll want to have a box of tissues nearby.

Snow Dogs
If you’re looking for a feel-good family movie that’s appropriate for all ages, Snow Dogs is a perfect pick. When a Miami doctor learns he’s inherited a team of sled dogs from his biological mother in Alaska, he must learn the tricks of the trade or risk losing his new pack to a local mountain man. With newfound determination, Dr. Ted Brooks decides to enter the infamous Arctic Challenge with his team against the man who is trying to take his dogs. This light-hearted comedy will have you laughing–because we’ve all been there with dogs at one point or another.

Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey
Homeward Bound is a true classic from my childhood. I have seen this movie with every dog throughout my life and I am sure it will continue to be a tradition for many years to come. When three special pets are left behind while their family travels to San Francisco for vacation, the trio set out on a quest to reunite with their loved ones. Their dangerous, yet thrilling journey takes them across many different Californian terrains, from forested mountains to wide-open ranges. If you want your pup to stay close to home, make sure they take note.
