Home On The Ranch

Home On The Ranch

What started out as a serene “day in the life” photoshoot this morning quickly turned into a wild goose chase after my favorite rooster. Nihmh became a bit enthusiastic with her job and herded our rooster onto the roof of the coop, all while I was trying to hold onto Khoena and my favorite hen so we wouldn’t have two chickens on the loose. After I put three of the dogs up, Norah and I went to track down our rooster and shoo him back home. Thirty minutes later, after multiple laps around the stable, crossing fence-lines and getting scratched up in our large pile of cut branches, I finally caught our fugitive. It was only then that I realized I had blood on my hands, my clothes and dripping onto my feet. It seems in his escapade, our mister cut open the bottom of his foot and I was devastated.

Life on a ranch with farm animals in the rural countryside just isn’t the same as being nearby a veterinarian clinic with a popular pet, such as a dog or a cat. I gently washed our rooster’s foot off with cool water near the coop, but decided it would be best to take him up to the house to doctor his foot. Much to my surprise, he laid calmly on his back while I applied an antibiotic ointment, gauze and bandaged up his foot. We also fashioned a chicken diaper out of a dust mask and our guy is now on best rest in our dogs’ extra large crate as we speak. His attitude is slowly creeping back in, so I have a feeling he’ll be just fine.

It’s never a dull moment here on the ranch. Whether it’s the chickens, the horses or the dogs, someone’s always giving us a run for our money… but we wouldn’t have it any other way. These incredible creatures bring so much joy to our lives and we’re so thankful to be blessed to live in the countryside away from the hustle and bustle of city life. There’s nothing quite like achieving your dreams and realizing there’s still so much more to life. Never stop dreaming, believing and achieving. Life is a journey; one that’s meant to endlessly take you in new directions and on new adventures until the end of time.
